- Many poor households in Yen Bai province are delighted this Spring because they have a solid new house, thanks to a joint effort by the authorities and the community to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses.

Temporary houses are now replaced with spacious houses.

The new house of Trinh Van Hien’s family is almost 100 square meters, with 3 bedrooms, a living room, and a kitchen. Hien used to be a skilled carpenter who earned enough to feed a family of four. But a few years ago he suffered an accident at work that led to financial difficulties and put his plans to build a new house on hold.

This year his family received 2,000 USD under Yen Bai province’s program to build houses for poor families. With that money, plus financial support from organizations, relatives, and loans, Hien was able to build a new house.“The government and social organizations helped me build this house. I’m very happy. My wife and I are hoping to escape poverty soon,” Hien is moved to say.

The family of Mong ethnic Sung A Khoang also have the solid new house they have long dreamed of.

Khoang said he was very grateful for the financial support of the State and other benefactors, including 2,800 USD from the local authorities.

Yen Bai provincial leaders donate money in support of the elimination of temporary and dilapidated houses in the locality in 2025.

A mountain region with challenging economic conditions, Yen Bai has implemented numerous projects and policies for sustainable poverty reduction.

Over the past two years, Yen Bai has built or repaired 3,000 houses. The money raised for this effort was 2.5 times the initial projected amount. Yen Bai also supported the construction of 750 additional houses.

Luong Manh Ha, Deputy Chairman of the People's Committee of Nghia Lo town, explained why the project was so successful.“The Nghia Lo administration mobilized multiple sources of assistance in addition to funding from the State and the community – donations from clans and families and volunteer work from the armed forces and mass organizations,” said Ha.

Luong Thi Xuyen, Deputy Chairwoman of the People's Committee of Mu Cang Chai district, told VOV,“We’ve mobilized contributions from the community, villages, and relatives, and from organizations that help the lonely elderly and struggling single-person households.”

More than 2,000 households in Yen Bai live in makeshift, dilapidated houses. Tran Huy Tuan, Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, said Yen Bai has set a goal to eradicate temporary and dilapidated housing by August this year.“People can contribute whatever they have. Localities must determine the number of poor and near-poor households to plan their support,” Tuan noted.

In 2025, Yen Bai hopes to reduce the poverty rate by 2.57%. Giving poor families a better house will help them stabilize their life and rise out of poverty.
